Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced the closure of its work-focused social network, Workplace. The service will be permanently shut down after June 1, 2026. This decision, while difficult, aims to streamline Meta's operations and focus on other initiatives.
In a statement posted on the Facebook community centre, Meta acknowledged the disruption this decision may cause to businesses, organizations, and partners that rely on Workplace. The company reassured users that their priority is to facilitate a smooth transition during this period.
Meta has provided a timeline for the shutdown of Workplace:
  • Until August 31, 2025: Users can continue using Workplace as usual.
  • September 1, 2025 - May 31, 2026: Workplace will only allow access to read and download existing data.
  • June 1, 2026: Access to Workplace will be terminated, and all Workplace instances will be deleted.
Additionally, Meta's account management and customer support teams will remain available to address any questions or concerns from Workplace admins.
In a memo addressed to Workplace customers, Meta suggested Workvivo, owned by Zoom, as a migration-ready alternative. However, the exact number of employees affected by the closure remains unclear at this time.
Meta outlined specific steps for Workplace users during the transition period:
  • Until August 31, 2025: Users can continue using Workplace normally, and Meta will provide a 50% discount on Workplace starting September 1, 2024.
  • From September 1, 2025 until May 31, 2026: Workplace will be accessible for reading and downloading existing data free of charge.
  • Users are encouraged to download their data using the "Download Your Information" tool in Workplace settings or through the Workplace API.
While Meta acknowledges that users may already have existing technology partners, Workvivo by Zoom is the company's preferred migration partner. Meta will collaborate with Zoom to offer additional tools and services to facilitate a smooth transition from Workplace to Workvivo.
