New Delhi: Tech mogul Elon Musk's anticipated visit to India, slated for April 21 and 22, has been delayed due to "very heavy Tesla obligations". Musk made this announcement on X a day prior to his planned India visit. Musk expressed his eagerness to visit India later this year. The Tesla CEO had plans to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day trip and announce Tesla's entry into the Indian market.
"Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year," Musk wrote on X.
The postponement comes after Musk expressed his eagerness to meet PM Narendra Modi in a tweet on April 10. The visit held significant promise, especially in light of India's recent notification of a new electric vehicle manufacturing policy. This policy allows the government to offer duty concessions to electric car companies committing to manufacture in India.
The postponement of Tesla CEO's India visit has been attributed to Musk's need to attend a crucial conference call on April 23 in the United States.
This conference call, described by Wedbush Securities as a 'moment of truth' for Tesla, will see Musk addressing inquiries about the company's first-quarter performance. With Tesla facing challenges such as slowing growth in China, investors are keen for Musk to outline growth strategies and pricing plans. Additionally, there is anticipation surrounding the launch of the low-cost Model 2, seen as vital for Tesla's future expansion.
The postponement of Musk's India visit has left industry observers curious, especially given the significance of his proposed meetings. Apart from engaging with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Musk was scheduled to meet with space startups and business leaders during his 48-hour visit to India.
So far there has been no response from the Indian government on the matter. As of now, new dates for Musk's visit to India have not been announced.
