Humans of Bombay: Founder Karishma Mehta
An old video of Karishma Mehta, the founder of Humans of Bombay, is currently making waves on social media due to a copyright infringement case that has garnered significant attention. In the viral clip, Mehta can be seen explaining how the idea for HOB came to her "completely out of the blue," and how it instantly resonated with her. She remarks, "Completely randomly and out of the blue, I stumbled upon the idea of Humans of Bombay and I started it. And it clicked. That period was a high of its own to start something new," she says. The video is gaining traction, as Brandon Stanton, the creator of Humans of New York (HONY), recently criticized Mehta for filing a lawsuit against a storytelling company on the pretext of a copyright issue. Stanton accused her of copying his "HONY" concept.
In the latter part of the video, Mehta shares how she didn't make money during the first three years of starting the organization and relied on pocket money from her parents. Since being uploaded, it has gathered over 132,000 views. One user commented, "Randomly out of the blue, I think about creating kids' characters, one would be a mouse and the other a duck... maybe call them Dickey and Monald." Another person wrote, "And the concept and the name turned out to be an exact replica of Humans of New York... damn! What a delicious coincidence."
Here's the viral video:
This is not the first time Mehta has faced trolling on social media. Earlier, a video went viral where she talked about her "privileges." In the video, the founder can be seen discussing how many people don't know her journey and still troll her. She talks about how she has often heard the word ‘privilege’ associated with her. She says, "I am privileged... in the sense that I come from a family that sent me abroad to study and invested a lot in my education." She also explained how she started Humans of Bombay with a loan worth Rs 1 lakh. However, this did not sit well with many people on Twitter, and she soon became the target of trolls.
