A startling case of negligence has emerged from Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, where a family's annual income is reported to be a mere ?2. The income certificate issued by the Tehsildar has gone viral, leaving netizens astonished and questioning how such a family can survive on such a minimal income.
The certificate belongs to Balram Chadhar, a resident of Ghoghra village in Banda Tehsil, and was issued in January 2024. Local 18 reporters visited the village to investigate the situation. Tizzu Chadhar, a family member, revealed that the household consists of five individuals who work as labourers due to their financial struggles. Balram, the youngest son in the family and currently in the 12th grade, had obtained the certificate to apply for a scholarship to support his education. However, when the scholarship was not granted, he spoke to his teachers, who discovered the error in the income amount listed on the certificate.
Balram explained that he initially reported an annual income of ?40,000 at the Common Service Centres, but the certificate erroneously reflected ?2 instead. Alarmingly, neither the individual who provided the certificate nor the Tehsildar, who approved it, noticed the mistake.
Following the incident, the officials responsible for issuing the incorrect certificate were transferred to another block. Balram confirmed that the erroneous ?2 income certificate has since been cancelled, and a new certificate reflecting the correct amount has been issued.
A previous report from Niti Aayog highlighted that multidimensional poverty in India decreased from 29.17 percent in 2013-14 to 11.28 percent in 2022-23, indicating that around 24.82 crore individuals have moved out of poverty during this timeframe.
