Pink, Yellow, Green Lights Dazzle Bengaluru; Glowing Sky Leave Residents Baffled
Bengaluru residents were captivated by a stunning celestial display of pink, green, and yellow hues in the sky, initially mistaken for an atmospheric phenomenon, sparking widespread curiosity and social media buzz.
The dazzling lights were the result of Comet C2023 A3
Residents of Bengaluru were treated to a rare celestial display on Monday evening as the sky transformed into mesmerising shades of pink, green, and yellow. Initially mistaken for an atmospheric phenomenon, the colourful lights sparked curiosity and excitement across the city, with many sharing photos and videos of the spectacle on social media.
Thrilled by the display, sky-watchers speculated on the cause, with one X (formerly Twitter) user, Vihar Vaghasiya, posting an image of the glowing sky, asking, “Bengaluru skies being just magical! What is this phenomenon even called?”
The mystery was soon resolved as reports identified the dazzling lights as the result of Comet C/2023 A3 (罢蝉耻肠丑颈苍蝉丑补苍–础罢尝础厂), a non-periodic comet that recently passed near Earth. Unlike well-known periodic comets like Halley's Comet, Comet C/2023 A3 is unpredictable, adding an extra layer of excitement for those who witnessed the rare event. A Bengaluru-based astrophysicist explained, “Non-periodic comets are virtually outsiders to our solar system.”
The comet, first discovered on January 9, 2023, by China's Purple Mountain Observatory, has been producing stunning visuals for Bengaluru residents over the past two days. Some observers reported seeing a glowing streak across the sky, while others captured what appeared to be iridescent clouds.
Astrophotographer Upendra Pinnelli shared insights on the comet's trajectory, noting, “The comet is visiting the Solar System after more than 80,000 years. It is approximately 129.6 million kilometers away from Earth and currently located in the Sextans constellation.”
The rare celestial event is not limited to Bengaluru—residents of Hyderabad will also have the opportunity to witness Comet C/2023 A3 until October 2, according to a report by the Deccan Chronicle.
