A transgender woman stated that the emotional pain and financial betrayal from her Japanese boyfriend motivated her to seek revenge through scams.
Amy's heartbreak drove her to seek revenge
A Thai transwoman, identified as Uthai Nantakhan, was arrested in Bangkok on August 4 for allegedly scamming 73 Japanese men out of approximately 30 million baht (around ?7.5 crore) over 13 years. According to reports from the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the investigation began after a Japanese man visiting Thailand reported that a transgender woman, known as Amy, had conned him out of 15 million baht (?3.7 crore).
The man claimed he met Amy in Thailand when she posed as a Hong Kong tourist who had lost her passport and purse. After forming an intimate relationship, Amy borrowed money for various expenses, including insurance and medical costs, which she never repaid. She also allegedly convinced him to buy gold, which she later exchanged for cash before disappearing.
Further investigation revealed that all of Amy's victims were Japanese nationals. Amy reportedly told authorities that her actions were motivated by a desire for revenge after a painful breakup with a Japanese boyfriend during college. She explained that she had been abandoned on a trip, leaving her to cover all the bills, and had also been scammed by another Japanese man, fuelling her hatred and leading her to a life of crime.
Police records indicate that Amy's fraudulent activities spanned from 2011 to 2024, targeting Japanese men. In Thailand, those convicted of fraud face up to three years in prison and fines of up to 60,000 baht (?60 lakh).
