Over the years, there has been a noticeable shift from joint families, where extended relatives live together under one roof, towards nuclear families consisting solely of parents and their children. This shift reflects broader societal changes, including urbanisation, economic independence, and evolving social norms. This transition has reshaped family dynamics and caregiving responsibilities, influencing how generations interact and support each other in contemporary societies. However, in Rajasthan, a family of 185 people known as the 'Bagdi Mali family' is challenging contemporary norms by maintaining a strong sense of unity. A video capturing their collective celebrations of various events has gone viral on social media.
Located in Ramsar village near Nasirabad, 36 kilometres from Ajmer, the family's house is a hub of activity. Due to its size, the kitchen operates on a grand scale. Ladi Devi, one of the daughters-in-law, revealed to the media that they use 13 stoves simultaneously in the mornings and evenings, cooking around 15 kg of vegetables and over 50 kg of flour daily to make chapatis. Their monthly expenditure on provisions amounts to approximately ?12 lakh.
This joint family spans six generations, comprising 65 men, 60 women, and 60 children. The patriarch, Sultan Mali, guided the family's principles until his passing. His sons—Mohanlal, Chhaganlal, Chhotulal, and Birdichand—alongside Bhanwarlal and Ramchandra (deceased), continue his legacy of unity and harmony.
Birdichand emphasised his father's teachings on familial unity, a principle upheld through collective decision-making during disputes among the elders. "There is deep affection among family members, and everyone understands the importance of nurturing relationships," he affirmed.
Occupationally diverse, some family members work in the government and private sectors, while others contribute through agriculture, livestock rearing, running building material shops, and driving tractors. Despite their varied pursuits, the family dines together, fostering solidarity through shared meals in times of joy and sorrow.
In a notable milestone, one of their daughters-in-law was elected as the village sarpanch in 2016. Her tenure has focused on enhancing local infrastructure, including road and drainage improvements, and ensuring consistent electricity supply.
Recently, the family gained widespread attention when Bollywood actors Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan visited their home while filming in Ajmer. Touched by the familial warmth they experienced, Sara Ali Khan shared a video featuring the family on her social media, highlighting their enduring bond and unity amidst a changing world.
