New Delhi: An aircraft carrying the message "Release Imran Khan" was seen flying above the skies of New York's Nassau during the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match on Sunday. The 71-year-old former cricket star was jailed on corruption charges and is also fighting several other cases that he and his party claim are politically motivated to prevent his return to power.
Khan, 71, was given a 10-year prison sentence from a lower court for allegedly disclosing a classified cable sent by Pakistan's ambassador in Washington to Islamabad in 2022. He has been jailed since August 2023. The state secrets case is one of four convictions handed down to Khan before Pakistan's national elections in February this year. In two of these cases, the sentences have been suspended.
Further, Khan faces several other accusations, including charges of inciting violence against the state.
Khan is at odds with the country's military, alleging that it has been targeting him and his party. The military denies such claims and has demanded that Khan and his supporters be prosecuted for attacking state installations during violent protests after his initial arrest last year.
Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, were banned from contesting the February election. Despite this, candidates supported by the jailed leader won the most seats. However, they did not have enough numbers to form a government, which was then formed by an alliance of his rivals led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
