A McDonald's employee in the Australian suburb of Booval was observed drying a wet mop beneath the fry heat lamp, reported the NY Post. Customers who shop in-store and online have expressed disgust and considerable attention to the April 4 incident.
Debbie Barakat, an individual who brought her son to the Booval McDonald's, saw the staff in action. Barakat recounted the experience to Yahoo! News Australia, stating, "I was just standing waiting for my order when I looked over and heard a staff member say; ‘I don’t think you should be doing that as it could be a safety issue as it can catch on fire.’” The staffer could be seen in the footage holding the wet mop head just inches from the fries and scorching lights. The public has widely condemned the occurrence after it was captured in a video that was shared on social media and went viral.
Customers expressed their distaste over the unhygienic actions in the store and online. Barakat observed while other employees worked around the mop, reaching over it to retrieve fries for orders. "I was totally shocked at what I witnessed and she just laughed it off," Barakat told Yahoo! News Australia. "Something needs to be done as if they are happy to do something like this in front of customers what exactly do they do behind the scenes?"
Following the incident, Barakat emailed the store’s manager to express her concerns about the hygiene violation. The manager's response was vague, stating, "Be assured that we’re taking corrective action so a similar action will not reoccur."
According to the NY Post, a McDonald's Australia representative addressed the matter and called it a rare incident. The spokesman underlined that McDonald's strictly follows cleaning, sanitization, and hygiene protocols at all of its restaurants and takes food safety very seriously.
The employee will continue to work for her employer in spite of the incident. McDonald’s has indicated that they will focus on better training for their workers to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The company aims to reinforce its commitment to maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene.
