New Delhi: Promotion of violence is never acceptable in Canada, a minister in Justin Trudeau said after a float depicting the assassination of former Indian prime minister, late Indira Gandhi, was put by pro-Khalistan symphathisers outside the Indian consulate in Vancouver earlier this week. The float was put up by the radicals as part of a protest against the 40th anniversary of Operation Bluestar which removed armed Sikh extremists from the Golden Temple.
"This week, there were reports of imagery depicting the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Vancouver," Dominic A LeBlanc, the Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs said on X, adding the "promotion of violence is never acceptable" in the country.
A Indian-origin Canadian MP had also raised concern, saying the act was an attempt to "instill fear of violence in Hindus" staying in the country.

Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984.
Canadian MP Chandra Arya said that the Sikh radicals were attempting to instill fear of violence in Hindus staying in Canada. "With picture of guns readily being used to convey the message may lead to something real if this is left to continue unchallenged," he said in a post on X.
In the recent past, Khalistan extremists have held a number of anti-India demonstrations on Canadian soil. Some of the protests, like in June 2023, have glorified the assassination of the former prime minister.
India has been repeatedly raising concerns over protests by Khalistan extremists in Canada.
Relation between New Delhi and Ottawa after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of having a role in the killing of a separatist leader last year. Canada has not provided India with any evidence to back its allegations against New Delhi on the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in British Columbia on June 18, 2023.
The allegations, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said, were part of Trudeau's strategy to appease his voter base. "Canada did not give any proof. They do not share any evidence with us in certain cases, police agencies also do not cooperate with us. It is their political compulsion in Canada to blame India. As election is coming in Canada, they indulge in vote bank politics," S Jaishankar said during a press conference in May.
Jaishankar said that Canada is playing a 'political game'. "There are 25 examples I have with me, who are either known pro-Khalistani individuals or part of gangs involved in crimes. We have given them extradition requests, they did nothing. There is a gang war going on there. They shift blame to India every time. But investigative agencies there never give any proof. What I feel is that it’s a political game."
