An image of a so-called 'Purple Apple' has gone viral on social media. Initially shared on Facebook by Marian Spencer, the photo shows an apple with dark purple skin and lilac flesh. Spencer claimed the fruit, named the Purple Apple or Canadian Grape, is native to the cold Saskatchewan region of Canada and tastes like cinnamon and banana.
"Their vibrant purple exterior hides a richly colored interior, making them prized ingredients, particularly in the creation of purple applesauce, celebrated by indigenous Saskatchewan peoples. This culinary tradition not only signifies cultural heritage but also fosters community unity and pride," Spencer wrote. "With their health benefits and potential economic impact, purple apples serve as a symbol of resilience and connection to the land, embodying the rich tapestry of Saskatchewan’s cultural and culinary heritage."
The post soon went viral, amassing over 98,000 reactions. However, it was later revealed that the image was AI-generated. Spencer updated the photo's caption, saying, "AI is amazing."
In the comments section, many commenters pointed out that the apple is not real.
"I’m in Regina, Saskatchewan and I promise, any apples we have growing here are not purple and do not taste anything close to a banana," one person wrote.
Another person commented, "AI might not realize that, Ontario is home of the apple, and we have never seen this here."
A third person wrote, "I am from Canada, driven all across it in the apple season; and I promise we ain’t got these apples."
"Tell us you never have put your feets in Canada, without telling us you never have put your feets in Canada. There's no Purple Apple here, Purple Apple exist yes, but they don't look like an Apple, more of an exotic alien fruits instead," commented another user.
