Bern: Italy and Switzerland have agreed to redrawn their borders. The decision was taken as the glaciers that mark the boundary melt, reported CNN. The border will be changed near the iconic Matterhorn Peak. Notably, it is the highest summit in the Alps.
A large section of the border between Italy and Switzerland is defined by glaciers and snow fields. “With the melting of the glaciers, these natural elements evolve and redefine the national border,” the Swiss government said in a statement on Friday as reported by CNN.
As per the report, the changes in the border were agreed in 2023, however, the Swiss government officially approved the adjustment on September 27. The impact on glaciers has been significant in Europe, the world's fastest-warming continent.
Meanwhile, in Switzerland, glaciers have been melting at an alarming rate. As per the CNN report, the European country's glaciers lost almost four per cent of their volume. Meanwhile, in 2022, it was six per cent.
"In 2024, glaciers continued to lose ice at high speed despite much snow in winter that was expected to bring some relief," a glaciologist at the Swiss university ETH Zürich and director of GLAMOS told the media house. Due to the melting of glaciers, the region has reportedly become prone to landslides.
Two years back, 11 people lost their lives in a glacier collapse in the Italian Alps.
