On August 1, 2024, at 9:43 PM local time, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck 18.2 kilometers (11 miles) from Rossano Stazione, Calabria, Italy. The earthquake had a shallow depth of 21 kilometers (13 miles), intensifying its impact near the epicenter, Volcano Discovery reported. Tremors were felt in Taranto, Bari, and Catanzaro.
Because of its shallow depth, the earthquake was felt extensively, according to seismic data. There was noticeable shaking in the vicinity of the epicenter, more so than if it had struck at a deeper depth. The earthquake's magnitude was first recorded by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) as 5.1. Later data, however, indicated a magnitude of 5.3, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The depth, magnitude, and epicenter might all change as seismologists continue to examine the data.
Many places felt the effects of the earthquake. Residents felt minor shaking at San Giovanni in Fiore, which was around 18 kilometers distant from the epicenter, and Rossano Stazione, which was about 21 kilometers away. Similar impacts were also observed at Quattromiglia, 40 kilometers distant, and Corigliano Scalo, 28 kilometers away from the epicenter. Forty kilometers from the epicenter, the city of Cosenza also felt some minor shaking.
At 60 kilometers from the epicenter, Lamezia Terme experienced some weak shaking. According to preliminary assessments, the earthquake only slightly damaged few windows and fell objects. We're keeping an eye on the situation and will offer more updates when new information becomes available.
An earthquake of mild magnitude 1.8 occurred earlier in the day, 13.6 km (8 mi) near Tolentino, Marche, Italy. The earthquake was too tiny for anyone to feel and only reached a depth of 23 km (14 mi).
