The blackout triggered by power outages in the Balkans, as per the local press affected the livelihood. The countries that went into a blanket darkness on Friday include Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania, and most of Croatia's Adriatic Coast. The disruption in businesses, a halt in city life, and people sweltering without air come as a heatwave spreads.
The shortage of power supply is believed to be one of the reasons behind the recent power crisis with a simultaneously dramatic jump in consumption due to the severe weather. In a report by the news agency Reuters, Montenegro's energy minister was quoted as saying that the same. Notably, the widespread blackout purportedly is linked to the existence of single-channel power distribution systems across the Balkans for what has been described as transfers and trading.
"This was just waiting to happen in this heat," a 24-year-old student in Montenegro Gentiana told the agency's reporter in the capital city of Podgorica.
The outage reports coupled with hundreds of residents complaining about the electricity outage on social sites. These posts suggested that people could not use even wifi networks, which went down from around 1 pm (1100 GMT). Meanwhile, operators confirmed to the news agency that the restoration activities began by mid-afternoon.
As temperatures rose to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in certain areas of the country, Reuters mentioned that traffic came to a complete stop in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, as well as in the cities of Banja Luka and Mostar.
"The failure occurred as a result of a heavy load on the network, a sudden increase in power consumption due to high temperature and the high temperatures themselves," remarked Montenegro's energy minister, Sasa Mujovic.
The origin or, starting point of the malfunction is yet to be determined, according to the Minister. A major fire incident was reported along Montenegro's border with Bosnia that led to a 400KW transmission line in a rugged area. However, there has not yet been an official confirmation or, any linkage(s) of the incident as the cause of power outages in the region.
