Kuwait Fire Tragedy: Most Victims Died In Sleep As Thick Black Smoke Led To Suffocation, Reveal Officials

Kuwait City: At least 49 people were killed in a fire that broke out in a building in Kuwait City on Wednesday. Around 50 people were also reportedly injured in the incident. As per officials when the blaze erupted, there were over 190 workers inside the building. The Officials further claimed that most of the people inside the building died due to smoke inhalation when they were sleeping.
The blaze, which erupted at around 4 am, started in the kitchen on Wednesday. The fire produced thick black smoke, leading to the suffocation of many victims, according to officials from the Kuwait Interior Ministry and the fire department, reported PTI.
Among the deceased 42 were reportedly Indians. The number of people from Kerala who died in the Kuwait fire tragedy has risen to 24. Meanwhile, seven Keralaites were severely injured. The identity of most of the victims is yet to be ascertained.
The Department of Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs (NORKA) was constituted by the state government in 1996 to address the grievances of non-resident Keralites both in India and abroad and to establish a sustainable partnership with them.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu's Minister for Minorities Welfare and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare, KS Masthan on Thursday that five people from the state died in the Kuwait fire incident.
"Five Tamilians died in Kuwait Mangaf tragedy. We got this information from Tamil Sangam in Kuwait, not officially from the Indian Embassy. As this is a fire tragedy it will take time to identify the deceased. When official information comes we will take measures to shift the body from Kuwait to their native in Tamil Nadu," Masthan said as quoted by ANI.
Earlier on Thursday, Union Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh arrived in Kuwait and immediately rushed to Jaber Hospital to ascertain well well-being of Indians who had been injured in the fire tragedy.
"On the directions of PM @narendramodiji, MoS @KVSinghMPGonda arrived in Kuwait and immediately rushed to Jaber hospital to ascertain well being of injured Indians in the fire incident yesterday. He met the 6 injured admitted at the hospital. All of them are safe," the Indian Embassy in Kuwait posted on 'X'.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Kuwaiti counterpart Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya on Wednesday night. Jaishankar urged the early repatriation of the mortal remains of those who lost their lives in the incident. EAM said that he was assured that the incident would be fully investigated.
PM Modi expressed grief over the Kuwait fire tragedy. The Prime Minister announced ex-gratia relief of Rs two lakh to the families of deceased Indian nationals from the Prime Minister Relief Fund.
