Rishi Sunak's Close Aide Placed ?100 Bet On July Snap Election 3 Days Before Official Announcement: Report

A Conservative spokesperson responded to the allegations saying that they are aware of the inquiry on Williams by the Commissions. “It is a personal matter for the individual in question. As the Gambling Commission is an independent body, it wouldn’t be proper to comment further, until any process is concluded,” the representative said.

Craig Williams, MP and UK PM Rishi Sunak's close aide, reportedly placed a ?100 bet on the UK holding elections in July. Williams, who is considered close to the Indian-origin Tory leader, placed the bet just three days before Sunak announced a snap general election on July 4.
The Guardian reported that the alleged bet is under enquiry by the Gambling Commission. Per the report, the bet was placed via online bookmaker Ladbrokes on May 19, just three days before the snap election was announced on May 23. It had an odd of 1/5, and Williams could have made ?100 if it went through.
Williams has acknowledged in a statement after the news broke that he had indeed placed a bet on the general elections 'some weeks ago.' He termed the enquiry into the alleged bet as 'routine' and said he would fully cooperate with the authorities. “I don’t want it to be a distraction from the campaign, I should have thought how it looks,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Guardian reported that the alleged bet was first flagged by the bookmakers through an automatic procedure after indications that it could have been placed by a "politically exposed person." The bookmakers collect personal information, such as date of birth, location and debit card details, as part of the procedure. Ladbrokes, the bookmaker for this bet, initially notified the Gambling Commission about the bet, who have already informed the Prime Minister's office, the report added.
A BBC report explained that the Commission does not typically confirm or deny whether any investigations are underway unless or until they are concluded. However, if someone uses confidential information to gain an unfair advantage when betting, this may constitute a criminal offence under Section 42 of the Gambling Act. Notably, the bet was placed while the UK Parliament was still in session.
Williams has served as a Tory MP for Cardiff North from 2015 to 2017. He was elected as the MP for Montgomeryshire in the 2019 general elections, after staying out of the parliament for two years following his defeat to Labour’s Anna McMorrin in Cardiff North. He has served as Sunak's secretary since October 2022.
