KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • US President Joe Biden avoided recent trends of mix-ups and flubs as he gave the welcome address at the NATO summit in Washington
  • Biden said Russia will not be able to win the war in Ukraine and the latter will be a free country when the war ends.
  • The NATO summit started on July 9 (Tuesday) and will do on till July 11 (Thursday).
As the Nato summit in Washington DC kicked off on July 9 (Tuesday), US President Joe Biden gave a welcome address to the NATO members and allies where he avoided the recent mix-ups and flubs, that have haunted the 81-year-old more than ever before since the June 27 first debate.
It was the POTUS's highest-profile speech since the debate, as it happened in front of 32 NATO member countries, their allies and the European Union, at the three-day conference in the US capital.
"(Vladimir) Putin wants nothing less, nothing less, than Ukraine's total subjugation ... and to wipe Ukraine off the map," Biden said as he took the stage at Melon Auditorium in Washington DC. "Ukraine can and will stop Putin. Russia will not prevail. Ukraine will prevail"
“Make no mistake: Russia is failing in this war,” Biden declared, highlighting that 350,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded, and another 1 million people have fled the country. “When this senseless war began, Ukraine was a free country. Today, it’s still a free country, and the war will end with Ukraine remaining a free and independent nation.”
The presumptive Democratic Party nominee also spoke about the progress NATO has made since its founding in 1949, as the alliance also celebrates its 75th year at this summit. "Today NATO is stronger than it's ever been in its history," Biden said.
NATO is a big part of President Joe Biden's campaign for the 2024 US elections on November 5. As opposed to his counterpart Donald Trump who maintains a skeptical stand on NATO, Biden has continuously emphasized the work his administration has done in keeping the alliance together, in his campaign speeches, as well.
After the debate fiasco, Biden sat down with ABC News's George Stephanopoulos for a 22-minute interview, which the ABC said was completely unedited. As Stephanopoulos quizzed the president on concerns related to his age, Biden kept bringing up NATO to emphasize that the work he has done as a leader of the alliance to keep it together, among others, proves that he is capable of another term as the POTUS.
"Part of the other concern is that-- this seems to fit into a pattern of decline that has been reported on recently. New York Times had a headline on July 2nd, 'Biden's lapses are said to be increasingly common and worrisome,'" the veteran journalist asked the president.
Biden replied: "In terms of successes, yes. I also was the guy who put together a peace plan for the Middle East that may be comin' to fruition. I was also the guy that expanded NATO. I was also the guy that grew the economy. All the individual things that were done were ideas I had or I fulfilled. I moved on."
