Kentrell Flowers, an 18-year-old alleged carjacker, was shot by a deputy US marshal who was part of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor's security detail. The incident was reported by law enforcement officials based on court documents.
The attempted carjacking, which took place outside Justice Sotomayor's house in Washington DC, was a random act, according to law enforcement. The court documents revealed that the attempted carjacking had nothing to do with Justice Sotomayor's residence. When it happened, the US marshal was in an unmarked car when Kentrell Flowers attempted to carjack him. Per court documents, the carjacker approached the deputy marshal's car and pointed a gun through the window. After that, the officer, who was on duty at the time, used his service weapon to shoot Flowers. Flowers is now undergoing treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Per reports, the deputy marshal fired four shots at Flowers, which injured the area around Flowers' mouth.
Flowers is facing charges for armed carjacking and CNN reported that it is not clear if a lawyer has been obtained by him.
Meanwhile, the US marshal is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department.
“The officer-involved shooting incident remains under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
Associated Press reported citing court documents that Sotomayor was not the target of the carjacking. It is more likely a part of the string of high-profile carjacking incidents in Washington in 2023. Other victims included a diplomat from the United Arab Emirates and U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas. Additionally, Secret Service agents protecting President Joe Biden’s granddaughter opened fire when three individuals attempted to break into an unmarked Secret Service vehicle last year.
