Making last mile mobility cleaner the Assam government has launched a new electric bike taxi service ‘Baayu’ in the state. Baayu is a mobile application based electric bike taxi service which is an initiative of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC).
A recent report from a news agency states that the Assam government has launched a new app based electric bike taxi service, Baayu in the state. Yesterday Parimal Suklabaidya, Assam Minister of Transport flagged off this new electric bike taxi service in the capital of Assam, Guwahati. Baayu is the country’s first decentralized mobile application based electric taxi service.
ASTC has rolled out Baayu in collaboration with electric mobility service provider startup, Bikozee to make last mile mobility cleaner, greener and more sustainable in the state.
The report highlights that Baayu is developed in tandem with the Assam Aggregator rules of 2022 and it is set to create 5,000 livelihood opportunities for local driving partners in the state by providing electric vehicles, technology platforms, insurance, training, skill development, and operating licenses for operation.
In collaboration with Bikozee Ecotech, Baayu integrates with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and adopts the Beckn protocol, aligning with NITI Aayog's Shoonya Zero pollution mobility campaign. This strategic alliance seeks to develop digital public infrastructures, contributing to the decentralized technologies that are reshaping the future of transportation, according to the report.
Government assisted shift to cleaner and more sustainable last mile mobility solutions in India will lead to development of an ecosystem for EVs and will in turn assist in easier adoption and transition to EVs among masses. If such initiatives backed by the state and central government continue on a larger scale then transition to greener and cleaner mobility solutions will become a breeze in a country as diverse as India. For this the policymakers need to keep in mind that making policy level changes in smaller towns, cities and villages is as important as making those changes in metropolitans and major cities for a large-scale adoption of cleaner mobility solutions.
