America’s iconic car brand Jeep, owned by Stellantis has revealed that it is finalizing an EV strategy for the electrification of cars in India. There has been a major shift in the automotive world with the advent of electric cars and most manufacturers have set their eyes on moving towards greener and cleaner mobility options like battery powered electric vehicles.
According to a report by a news agency, Jeep, owned by Stellantis, is about to finalize its EV strategy for the Indian market. The report also revealed that the company is also focussing on increasing localisation for the development of EVs in India taking great advantage of the Make in India initiative. The report stated that the company is aiming to increase localisation by 40 percent from the current level of 70 percent. "It is not just localizing for India, but it is India for India and India for the world,” said Aditya Jairaj, Head of Jeep India Operations and Deputy Managing Director at Stellantis India. The company is aiming at a high level of over 90 percent localisation for its new product range in the Indian market.
The EV strategy for Jeep EVs is still under work in India and the company is currently assessing different avenues and options for the Indian domestic market. "Options for electrification (of vehicles) is something we are studying right now because the customer is at the centre and his (customer's) needs have to be satisfied. Globally, we have a vast expansion of the EV portfolio. So, we are evaluating different options for India," said Aditya Jairaj.
Like the global automotive market India too has caught on with electric cars and most manufacturers in the country now have some or the other sort of electric or hybrid vehicle offering in the market. Jeep is one of the few brands that currently doesn’t have any electric, hybrid or CNG car in their lineup. To keep up with the evolving Indian market the company would like to change that and tap in at an ideal time to enter the electric car space in the Indian market.
The company also shed light on their export strategy and revealed that they are currently exporting products like Jeep Compass and Jeep Meridian to the international market. The company seems to have realized the potential of ‘Make in India, for the World’ and states that it is eager to make India an even bigger global export hub for the company. The company also revealed that making India their global export hub is a part of their long term strategy.
