Bengaluru: The Bengaluru airport authorities have revoked the recently announced fee structure that required private and commercial vehicles to pay an access fee to enter the airport premises, following a backlash from cab operators and passengers. This reversal comes just hours after the notification that travel to and from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru would become more expensive starting Monday.
Earlier, it was said that commercial vehicles (yellow board), including those operated by cab aggregators such as Ola and Uber, will be charged an entry fee of Rs 150 for up to seven minutes. If the vehicle exceeds this time limit, the fee increases to Rs 300. Private vehicles (whiteboard) will be charged Rs 150 if their stay exceeds seven minutes but remains within 14 minutes.
These fees apply to both arrivals and departures at Terminals 1 and 2. Additionally, buses will incur an entry fee of Rs 600, while tempo travellers will be charged Rs 300, as per an Indian Express report.
Radhakrishna Holla, President of the Karnataka State Travel Operators’ Association, highlighted that the new fees will negatively impact people since they already pay a toll tax just 6 km away from the airport. He expressed concern that the added costs will make rides to and from the airport more expensive. Holla criticised the decision, arguing that customers and cab drivers are unfairly burdened due to their reliance on Bengaluru airport. He suggested that a 30-minute window should have been provided to avoid these hefty charges.
Earlier, Tanveer Pasha, President of the Ola Uber Drivers’ and Owners’ Association, noted that the new fees have been poorly received by the drivers. He explained that previously there were no charges for waiting to pick up or drop off passengers, but now BIAL aims to profit from this activity. Pasha emphasised that this change will ultimately place a financial burden on the public, as per an Indian Express report.
