Bengaluru: Biocon's Chairperson, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, has taken a firm stand against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for neglecting the cleanliness of Bengaluru's streets. Her criticism followed the circulation of a video on social media, depicting a lengthy stretch of the Outer Ring Road cluttered with garbage. Expressing her dismay, Mazumdar-Shaw urged the BBMP to seriously address the "disgusting" situation and clean up the "ugly mess".
In a tweet, she stated, ''Disgusting sight. @BBMPSWMSplComm needs to act swiftly to clean up this ugly mess,'' accompanied by the video clip. The video swiftly went viral, prompting many social media users to demand immediate action from the authorities. While some criticised the municipal bodies for the unsightly scene, others acknowledged that such occurrences were sadly common in various cities across the country and citizens are equally at fault. However, there were also voices advocating for greater civic responsibility among citizens, commenting on the need for proper waste disposal practices.
An user named Shreehari posted another video from the same site with the caption "Yes this is next to the same road. Even more shameful is most of the expats, consulates, ministers, even BBMP top officers stay in this locality,y and they take this route everyday! We are not only letting our city down we are also letting our nation down by displaying such filthy habits. Long back I myself took this initiative to clean up the are at my own cost and also informed locality and offices to atleast continue to maintain or bring some action to stop this mess people dumping garbage on the roads. Nothing changed habit continues."
One user shed light on the embarrassment caused by the situation, particularly in a locality frequented by expatriates, consulates, and government officials. Another pointed out the absence of public trash bins as a contributing factor to the problem, calling for their installation and maintenance by civic bodies. Similarly, another user stressed the importance of educating and penalising individuals who engage in irresponsible waste disposal habits.
Adding to the discourse, a fourth commenter wrote, ''Hi Maam - It has been similar in few areas now. I have observed people dumping waste near metro stations, dividers and this happens during night. We need to penalise the offenders heavily along with CCTV cameras to identify who repeatedly dump in these places.''

Bengaluru's Chickpet Market Faces Chaos Amid Construction Delays

In another news from Bengaluru, for the next 100 days, visitors to Chickpet, a bustling wholesale market in Bengaluru, can expect chaos due to ongoing white-topping work on one side of its narrow road, as reported by TNIE. The market, home to clothing stores, electronics outlets, and eateries, is already congested, and the construction has made navigation even more challenging. Shop owners report a decrease in revenue as customers struggle to access the area.
Despite assurances of completion within a month, officials confirm the project will take over 100 days. Lack of coordination among civic bodies adds to the challenges faced by businesses. Traffic disruptions and dwindling footfall further worsen the situation, leaving shop owners worried about their livelihoods.
