The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a ban on the slaughter and sale of meat in Bengaluru on October 2, in observance of Gandhi Jayanti. The decision, issued by BBMP’s animal husbandry division, comes amidst opposition from various citizen groups. Many have requested the government reconsider the ban due to the date coinciding with Pitru Paksha or Mahalaya Amavasya, a significant Hindu festival dedicated to honouring ancestors.
Members of the Jayaprakash Narayana Vichara Vedike, a citizen collective, voiced their concerns in an appeal. “Many Hindu families in Karnataka prepare non-vegetarian food as an offering to their ancestors during this sacred period. Considering the overlap with Gandhi Jayanti, we respectfully request the government to lift the ban on the sale of meat,” they stated, as quoted by Deccan Herald.
Liquor shops will be closed on October 2 in Bengaluru on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. According to the excise department, these closures are in observance of significant national and religious events. Liquor shops across the country will remain closed on Gandhi Jayanti, commemorating the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, as a mark of respect for the "Father of the Nation."
