Tech giant Google has cut down numerous jobs in its trust and safety team. Still, the number of employees affected by job cuts is unclear. The cuts, affecting fewer than 10 of the 250-strong team, were confirmed by insiders who wished to remain anonymous, according to a Bloomberg report.
According to the report, despite the cuts, Google is increasingly relying on its trust and safety staff. Recently, some have been asked to work over the weekend to prevent further Gemini missteps. The cuts won’t affect those directly working on Gemini, but the broader team is dealing with a heavy workload due to Gemini generating historical images.

Long-Planned Tech-Layoffs

Google described the job cuts as part of its ongoing cost-cutting efforts. Since mid-January, the company has been restructuring across teams. “We’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead,” a Google spokesperson said, Bloomberg quoted.

Reorganisation For More Support

The reorganisation will help Google provide more support for its AI products and allow it to add more trust and safety roles. However, those working on ensuring the safety and accuracy of Google’s AI tools have struggled with low morale and a feeling of disempowerment over the past year.

CEO Sundar Pichai Acknowledges Dependence on Teams

Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the company’s increased dependence on the teams. He said employees were “working around the clock” to remedy the problems users had flagged with Gemini’s responses. He added that Google had already seen “a substantial improvement on a wide range of prompts” in Gemini, Bloomberg reported.
