New Delhi: The Right to Information Act of 2005 is a law that ensures citizens can request information from the government and receive timely responses. It aims to promote transparency and clarity by allowing individuals to access government information easily. The Department of Personnel and Training, under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, has established an RTI Portal Gateway for citizens to quickly search for information regarding first Appellate Authorities, PIOs, and more. This initiative enables people to obtain relevant information from any government office within 30 days of filing a request.
The Act also extends to organisations like the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), mandating them to respond to RTI applications and provide the requested information. Here's a step-by-step guide to filing RTI applications online.

Who can file an RTI?

Any citizen has the right to request information by submitting an application in writing or electronically in English, Hindi, or the official language of the area where the application is made. A prescribed fee is required with the application, except for citizens below the poverty line as per RTI Rules, 2012, who are exempt from paying any fees.

Steps To File An RTI:

Step 1: Visit the official RTI portal at https://rtionline.gov.in.
Step 2: Click on the "Submit Request" option to submit an RTI application.
Step 3: After clicking on "Submit Request," a screen titled "Guidelines for Use of RTI ONLINE PORTAL" will appear, providing various guidelines for using the RTI online portal. Check the checkbox to agree to the guidelines, then click on the "Submit" button.
Step 4: Next, the "Online RTI Request Form" screen will be displayed. From the "Select Ministry/Department/Apex body" dropdown menu, choose the Ministry or Department for which you wish to file an RTI.
Step 5: If you provide a mobile number, you will receive SMS alerts. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory, while others are optional.
Step 6: If you belong to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, select "Yes" in the "Is the applicant below the poverty line?" field and upload a BPL card certificate in the supporting document field.
