NHAI Rolls Out 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' To Ensure Fair Toll Collection - All You Need To Know

The NHAI has initiated this measure in response to reports of multiple FASTags issued for a single vehicle and instances of FASTags being distributed without proper KYC, violating RBI mandates. Additionally, the failure to affix FASTags on vehicle windscreens causes unnecessary delays at toll plazas, inconveniencing fellow highway users.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative, effective April 1, 2024. This move aims to curb the misuse of FASTags, where a single FASTag is used for multiple vehicles or multiple FASTags are associated with one vehicle. The initiative comes after NHAI extended the compliance deadline to March end due to challenges faced by Paytm FASTag users.
Purpose of 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' Concept
The NHAI has initiated this measure in response to reports of multiple FASTags issued for a single vehicle and instances of FASTags being distributed without proper KYC, violating RBI mandates. Additionally, the failure to affix FASTags on vehicle windscreens causes unnecessary delays at toll plazas, inconveniencing fellow highway users.
As per a January Press Information Bureau release, "NHAI has taken this initiative after the recent reports of multiple FASTags being issued for a particular vehicle and FASTags being issued without KYC in violation of RBI’s mandate. Apart from this, FASTags are sometimes deliberately not fixed on the windscreen of the vehicle, resulting in unnecessary delays at the toll plazas and causing inconvenience to fellow National Highway users,"
FASTag KYC Requirement
NHAI is urging FASTag users to complete the 'Know Your Customer' (KYC) process for their FASTags in accordance with RBI guidelines. FASTags with sufficient balance but incomplete KYC will be deactivated or blacklisted by banks after February 29, 2024, as stated in the PIB release.
Identifying Incomplete FASTag KYC
The users will receive notifications via email, SMS, or the issuing bank's application interface if their FASTag KYC is incomplete. They are advised to monitor their registered communication channels for updates. The KYC can be updated online through the following procedure:
FASTags are issued to each vehicle based on the RC copy of the vehicle. Any attempt to use a FASTag for a different vehicle will be detected by the ETC system at toll plazas, leading to the FASTag being 'blacklisted' by the issuer bank. Such practices are discouraged, and users are advised to comply with guidelines to avoid inconvenience.
