Almost 13 years ago on a rainy day, a two-year-old girl went missing from her home in Chennai's Saligramam. The Greater Chennai Police processed an image of a 14-year-old girl using artificial intelligence after working on a few pictures of the girl when she was one or two years old. Looking at the picture the parents found hope that their child would come back to their lives.
“She looks so beautiful,” G Vasanthi, the mother, tells her husband, G Ganesh, running her fingers over the image. The police will shortly circulate the image in all stations, orphanages and public places along with posting it on social media platforms, reported The Times of India.
“We hope she sees the image,” says Ganesh. “We've been to many astrologers and all of them told us she will return.
” The couple had their first child, Dhanush, in 2004 and their second child, Kavita, was born in 2009. On September 19, 2011, around 6 pm the family realised their young girl was missing. Ganesh was not home and his wife was busy in the kitchen. Ganesh recalled that at first, they thought that she went upstairs to his brothers and sisters. Only after talking to the neighbours did they find out that the girl was seen standing at the open gate and a few moments later she was gone, according to a TOI report.
After searching all around the neighbourhood they filed a complaint to the Virugambakkam police station. “We kept going to the station, and they kept telling us that they were trying their best. A year later I met then city police commissioner J K Tripathy who forwarded the case to the Central Crime Branch,” said G Ganesh as quoted by the media house.
In 2015, the parents filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madras High Court. Ganesh further said “In a few months, the advocate withdrew the petition without our consent. That's when we turned to temples and astrologers.”
The police told the family in 2022 that they were keeping the case on hold and a year later they said they were closing it.
In Feb 2023, Ganesh filed another petition in Saidapet Court stating his unwillingness to close the case. Six months later the CAWC (Crime Against Women and Children) wing along with a police team headed by an additional deputy commissioner, resumed work on the case. The new investigation team created an AI-based image of the child.
“We generated an image of how the girl would look now. The parents also feel she would be looking like the generated image," a senior police officer said as quoted by the media house. The police are trying to trace the girl.
