Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Chennai and its neighbouring cities, forecasting light to moderate rain accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning over the next few days. This alert follows a significant downpour that brought much-needed relief from the recent heatwave, lowering temperatures by a few degrees. The IMD's forecast suggests that residents should prepare for a week of unsettled weather, with rainfall expected throughout the period.
In a welcome change from the scorching heat, several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, received a good amount of rainfall on Friday. This widespread downpour brought a cool relief, lowering temperatures by a few degrees.

Chennai Weather Forecast

The weather in Chennai is about to get more intense as a yellow alert for thunderstorms has been issued. The weather forecast for the next seven days suggests rainfall throughout the week.
From May 18 to May 23, the weather in the region is expected to be partly cloudy with varying chances of rain. On May 18 and 19, temperatures are predicted to range between 34-35 degrees Celsius during the day and 26-27 degrees Celsius at night, with light to moderate rain likely in some areas. Similar conditions are expected on May 20, with temperatures slightly cooler at 32-33 degrees Celsius and light rain anticipated in some locations.
May 21 will see temperatures between 31-32°C, accompanied by light rain. The weather on May 22 will continue with partly cloudy skies, temperatures at 31-32 degrees Celsius, and a likelihood of light to moderate rain. By May 23, temperatures will rise slightly to 33-34 degrees Celsius during the day and 26-27 degrees Celsius at night, with light to moderate rain expected in some areas. Throughout this period, no severe weather warnings have been issued.

Tamil Nadu Weather Update

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy to very heavy rains over the next two days in several districts, including Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, Virudhunagar, and Nilgiris.
The IMD issued a Yellow Alert for the picturesque Nilgiris district, warning of very heavy rain. In response, the district administration advised tourists to avoid visiting from May 18 to May 20.
District Collector M Aruna said, “We have put in place enough precautions. People have been asked to be careful during rains. As far as tourists are concerned, it is better for them to avoid visiting Nilgiris during heavy rains, but if they still wish to, we have put in place enough measures to take care of them.”
This advisory comes as tourists have started returning to Ooty, a popular spot in the Nilgiris. Recently, Ooty experienced its highest-ever temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, a sharp contrast to the near-zero temperatures recorded in January.
Extreme temperatures in both winter and summer have raised concerns among activists who link these changes to climate change. They are urging the government to take action to protect the hill station, which attracts millions of tourists during the peak season from April to June due to its cool climate.
