Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a generally cloudy sky with light rains. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is forecast to hover around 27 degrees Celsius on Friday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected ongoing light to moderate rainfall across several regions, with isolated heavy downpours anticipated until May 19. This weather phenomenon is attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of southern Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the IMD anticipates isolated instances of very heavy rainfall in certain areas of southern Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats. Over the course of the week, southern and western parts of Tamil Nadu, including the Cauvery delta districts, have been experiencing precipitation.
Until 7:30 PM, the city's two observatories in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered only 3.7mm and 5mm of rainfall, respectively. However, despite the minimal rainfall, the overcast skies caused a significant drop in daytime temperatures, with readings reaching 29.3 degrees Celsius and 28.1 degrees Celsius, marking a deviation of around 8.1 degrees Celsius and 10.3 degrees Celsius below the normal range. These temperatures closely resembled the readings of 27.3 degrees Celsius and 25.2 degrees Celsius recorded at the two weather stations before sunrise.
As per a Times of India report, N. Senthamarai Kannan, director of the regional weather forecasting centre at IMD, noted that the skies remained overcast even before sunrise, with no sunlight. He explained that the slight difference of two to three degrees between night and day temperatures was attributed to illumination after sunrise. Kannan further mentioned the likelihood of rainfall in the city over the next three to four days.
