Chennai: Commuters are going to get a relief from huge traffic jams as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to wrap the construction work of two crucial flyovers by the end of this year. As of now, two flyovers - one at Tondiarpet and another at Vyasarpadi - are undergoing construction work.
In Ganeshapuram of Vyasarpadi, the work of laying foundation, pillars and steel structuring has been completed. Meanwhile in Korukkupet, pillars have been erected and flyover construction work is going on. The flyover will be of help during the time of monsoon. It is because the Ganeshapuram subway gets submerged with the rainwater, and cut off traffic to Vyasarpadi.
A few days ago, J Radhakrishnan, GCC commissioner, reviewed the flyover work, and said the work will be completed by the year-end. “The officials have been directed by me to speed up land acquisition. These will be helpful in decongesting dense traffic snarls in north Chennai,” he said, quoted by Times of India.
The authorities faced a number of challenges to carry out the work of the flyovers, leading to the delay of their completion. One of the issues that the GCC faced was the land-related issues. The work had started last year on the flyover but was delayed due to the land acquisition. Earlier this year, the officials held a meeting to solve the issue, and succeeded.
The flyover in Vyasarpadi is 680 metres long and 15 metres wide. It is being built at the cost of Rs 142 Crore. This flyover is coming up above the existing Ganeshapuram subway and a suburban railway track. Once completed, the flyover will divert the two-lane traffic in the subway into six-lanes (four lanes on the flyover and two lanes in the subway).
At present, over 1,000 vehicles use the subway per hour. The vehicle load will reduce at the railway crossing, removing the bottleneck,” an official with GCC bridges said.
Speaking of the flyover coming in Korukkupet, it will ease traffic over a railway crossing. It will facilitate a faster commute to Kodungaiyur and areas beyond.
