In a memorable moment for Indian Democracy, members of the Shompen tribe from Andamans and Nicobar Islands came together to vote for the first time in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Industrialist Anand Mahindra posted the picture on X, saying it is "the best picture of 2024 elections".

One of the seven Shompen tribes in Great Nicobar, voted for the first time during the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, on April 19. Industrialist Anand Mahindra took to X and shared a photo stating that it is, for him, the 'Best picture' of the Lok Sabha polls 2024.
"This, for me, is the best picture of the 2024 elections. One of seven of the Shompen tribe in Great Nicobar, who voted for the first time," the Chairman of Mahindra group said.
The photo shows a man of the tribe showing his inked finger after casting vote. "Democracy: it’s an irresistible, unstoppable force," Anand Mahindra added in his post.
Seven Shompen members, who reside in Nicobar Islands tropical forests, voted for the first time. The members participated during the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections 2024 and exercised their franchise on April 19, during the first phase. They posed for a photo in front of the “Shompen hut” (a photobooth set up) at polling station 411. The pictures were published by the Chief Election Officer of the Andaman and Nicobar Island.
The Shompen tribe had an estimated population of about 229 people, according to the 2011 population census report. According to the Chief Electoral Officer BS Jaglan, voters received instructions on the EVM and VVPAT machines through a hired trainer. "It's good to see they came out of the jungle and voted for the first time," Jaglan said.
Internet users are describing the post as "the picture of the day". One user commented, "One of the finest images celebrating Democracy in our diverse Country", adding “the Citizens can't even imagine the pain of the administration to convince them in the Electoral process. A Big Hug and a Warm Welcome to the people on believing the Mainstream, let us not disappoint them".
