New Delhi: As the political battle heats up ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP is expected to announce the first list of candidates by this weekend. A midnight meeting, spanning four hours, witnessed the participation of key BJP figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda, as they deliberated on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Times Now sources reveal that the BJP has crafted a unique strategy this time to meticulously select candidates deemed most suitable for the electoral fray.

Decoding Modi-Shah's Strategy Behind Candidate Selection Process

Utilising technology to its advantage, the BJP has adopted a unique approach to gathering grassroots feedback. Through the Namo App, the public was encouraged to share their views on the performance of current MPs. Departing from traditional methods, the party went a step further by soliciting opinions on the three most popular leaders in each locality, ensuring a bottom-up approach that resonated with local sentiments.
Over the past two years, the BJP has consistently sought feedback from its MPs, actively assessing their performance and addressing concerns. To augment the decision-making process, the party collaborated with survey agencies to compile comprehensive reports on each parliamentary constituency.
Ministers were assigned the task of visiting Lok Sabha constituencies, compiling detailed reports, and providing valuable insights into the performance of incumbent MPs.
The collected data from various sources, including ministers and organizational channels, was then reviewed in state-level election committee meetings, forming the basis for the final candidate selection process. Subsequent to these deliberations, state-level BJP groups engaged in discussions with top leaders such as Nadda, Home Minister Shah, and General Secretary BL Santosh.
In a concerted effort to attract candidates from diverse backgrounds, the BJP extended its outreach beyond party lines. The party leadership made it clear that MPs with underwhelming performance would not hesitate to have their tickets revoked, potentially leading to the cancellation of tickets for 60-70 incumbent MPs to accommodate fresh faces.
Highlighting the representation of Other Backward Classes (OBC), the BJP anticipates many OBC MPs to contest again. In the 2019 general elections, the BJP celebrated success with 85 OBC MPs emerging victorious.
Notably, the BJP aims to announce candidates for more than 50% of the Lok Sabha seats prior to the official announcement of the elections, following a pattern reminiscent of the 2019 election. During that time, the BJP had disclosed 164 candidates on March 21, several weeks before the election announcement. Sources indicate that these lists are curated through a "winnability survey," aimed at identifying the most suitable candidates for each constituency.
