Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Why Western UP Is Politically Significant For Parties

Lok Sabha Polls 2024: In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP bagged Muzaffarnagar, Kairana and Pilibhit, while the SP emerged victorious in Moradabad and Rampur, and the BSP in Saharanpur, Nagina and Bijnor. Subsequently, the BJP wrested back Rampur in a bypoll.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: The BJP launched its poll campaign in the region by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a massive rally on March 31.

New Delhi: As the first phase of seven-phased Lok Sabha elections - billed by BJP as a milestone for its 'Viksit Bharat by 2047' mission - kicks off in 21 states, all eyes are fixed on western Uttar Pradesh (UP), the Jat Land. The voters of eight Lok Sabha constituencies in the region, falling in the sugarcane belt, will exercise their constitutional right today.
The region has a substantial influence of Muslims ranging from 23 to 42 percent, thus significantly impacting the prospects of candidates vying for electoral success. This demographic diversity underscores the pivotal role of minority votes in steering the region's political trajectory.
'Voting For BJP Against Our Imaan'
Once infamous for incidents of snatching, looting, and molestation, the region has seen a remarkable improvement in law and order under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This has been acknowledged by even Muslims, who aren't considered natural voters of the BJP.
"A few years ago, we couldn't go out of our house in the evening as it was not safe. But things are changing now. Our leaving the house at night says a lot about the security situation,” a 26-year-old girl told The Print while enjoying a slice of pizza with her friends.
However, the improvement in law and order is unlikely to translate into votes for the saffron party.
"Suraksha to badhi hai lekin fir bhi BJP ko vote dena hamare imaan ke khilaaf hoga kyunki wo hamare dharm par hamla karte hain (The law and order situation has definitely improved but voting for BJP would go against our integrity as they target our religion)," a man in his 50's told the Print.
Why Western UP Is Politically Significant For Parties
Traditionally, Muslims in western UP have voted either for the Samajwadi Party (SP) or the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). With 27 Lok Sabha seats, the region can play a big role in the elections - billed by the BJP as a milestone to 2047 and the Opposition as a battle for democracy's survival.
Keeping this in mind, the BJP - which has joined hands with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) - launched its poll campaign in the region by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a massive rally on March 31. On April 9, Modi held his second rally in Pilibhit, where the BJP has fielded Jitin Prasada, neglecting two-time member of Parliament Varun Gandhi.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has addressed more than 20 rallies in the constituencies going to polls in the first phase.
SP president and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has addressed rallies in Pilibhit, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad and Nagina while BSP chief Mayawati and her nephew Akash Anand have addressed several election meetings.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a massive roadshow in Saharanpur, garnering support for Imran Masood, who is in the fray as the INDIA opposition bloc candidate.
Ram Temple to Farm Bills - Key Issues Raised By BJP And Congress
The BJP has pitched its campaign on development and the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The opposition leaders have raised the issues of farm bills and unemployment in the region.
These issues, however, are secondary for voters in the region, for whom inflation and the menace of stray cattle damaging crops remain key issues.
Prominent Candidates In Western UP
The BJP has fielded Jitin Prasada from Pilibhit, Union minister Sanjeev Balyan from Muzaffarnagar.
Azad Samaj Party chief Chandra Shekhar Azad will contest from Nagina.
The SP's Muslim face in Rampur, Azam Khan, is conspicuous by his absence in the constituency as he is lodged in a jail in Sitapur.
