'Two Types Of Martyrs...': Rahul Gandhi's Controversial Criticism Of Agniveer Scheme Draws Flak From BJP

Addressing a rally in Bhagalpur on Saturday, Rahul Gandhi remarked on the Agniveer scheme: "As soon as this INDIA coalition government comes to power, we will end the Agniveer Yojana. Hindustan does not need two kinds of martyrs. One kind of martyr is needed... Everyone should get a pension... Do alag tareeke ke jawan nahi chahiye."

Rahul Gandhi has stirred controversy yet again, with a statement on "shaheed" at a rally in Bhagalpur, Bihar, on Saturday. Addressing the rally, Rahul remarked on the Agniveer scheme, stating, "As soon as this INDIA coalition government comes to power, we will end the Agniveer Yojana. Hindustan does not need two martyrs. One kind of martyr is needed... Everyone should get a pension... Do alag tareeke ke jawan nahi chahiye."
The remark has drawn a sharp response from the BJP.
BJP spokesperson Manjinder Singh Sirsa called the statement "very insensitive," questioning the need for martyrs and the mentality behind it. "Why do you need martyrs, let alone of one kind? Why don't you need it from your family? Our jawans get heads of the enemies... why do you wish to make them martyrs?" Sirsa remarked.
The Congress, however, hit back, with its Sainik Cell Head Col Rohit Chaudhry (Retd.) saying: "BJP must first answer why 115 soldiers lost their lives in 2023... Agniveer Scheme has divided the Army into two types of soldiers, same kind of service, same kind of operation, but different treatment to serving soldiers and martyrs."
At the same rally, Rahul predicted BJP's limited success, stating, "These BJP people have kept saying that they will secure this many or that many seats, let me make it clear, they (BJP) won't get more than 150 seats. Not even a single seat more than 150."
Promising changes if his party comes to power, Rahul pledged to implement a minimum tax, double the salary of Asha and Anganwadi workers, waive off farmers' debts, and ensure a guaranteed minimum support price for farmers.
"We are giving two guarantees to the farmers. The Congress party is going to waive off the farmers' debts, and secondly, we are going to provide a guaranteed minimum support price to the farmers of India," he said.
Additionally, he proposed granting all graduates and diploma holders the right to an apprenticeship, ensuring opportunities in the public, private, and government sectors.
"All the graduates and diploma holders of India, we are going to give them a right, the right to apprenticeship. The right to apprenticeship means that our next government is going to give every youth of India the right to a first job. Everyone will get an apprenticeship for one year with salary. They will receive training, and if they perform well in the first year, they will get a permanent job. These apprenticeship jobs will be available in public units, in the private sector, and in the government sector," he said.
With the Lok Sabha elections underway, voting for the first phase concluded recently, marking the beginning of a crucial electoral process across India's parliamentary constituencies. Subsequent phases are scheduled through June 1.
