New Delhi: A special session of Parliament is likely to be called on June 24 and the elected Members of Parliament (MPs) will take oath on June 24 and June 25. This comes as Modi 3.0's swearing-in is done and portfolios have been allocated to the new ministers. Now the focus has shifted to the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker as is remains unclear if Om Birla will continue or be replaced.
The special session is likely to begin on June 24 and will go on till July 3, sources told Times Now. The session will be for a total of 8 working days.
The election of the speaker might happen on June 26. N Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and Nitish Kumar's JD(U), BJP's key allies whose support is critical for the government's majority, are eyeing the post.

How Is The LS Speaker Elected?

As per the Constitution, the Speaker's position becomes vacant just prior to the first session of the new Lok Sabha. To oversee the swearing-in of newly elected MPs, the President appoints a pro-tem Speaker. Following this, the Lok Sabha proceeds to elect its Speaker through a simple majority vote. Although no specific qualifications are outlined for the role, familiarity with the Constitution and parliamentary procedures is advantageous. In the past two Lok Sabhas, both of which saw BJP dominance, Sumitra Mahajan and Om Birla served as Speakers.
Typically, the Speaker is elected during the initial gathering of Lok Sabha members. Prior to this, a pro-tem Speaker, often the most senior MP, is temporarily appointed. This pro-tem Speaker presides over the initial sessions of the new house, administers oaths to incoming MPs, and oversees the election process for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Who Are The Frontrunners?

Daggubati Purandeswari: Daughter of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Founder NT Rama Rao, Daggubati Purandeswari is a BJP politician from Andhra Pradesh and also the State President of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). She was the Minister of Human Resource Development in 2009 and MoS in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the year 2012.
Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu: The three-time MP, who was first elected to the august house in 2014 as a 27-year-old, is said to be among the frontrunners. His is the son of ex-Union Minister Kinjarapu Yerran Naidu.
GM Harish Madhur: Another leading contender is first-time MP GM Harish Madhur. He is the son of former Lok Sabha Speaker Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi's son. Harish unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, which he lost by a margin of less than 40,000 votes. This time, he won with a margin of more than 3.42 lakh in an election dominated by the TDP and its allies.
