New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday exuded confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning a majority of seats in West Bengal in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. Talking about the electoral prospects of the saffron party in the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-ruled state, Shah told ANI that his party would win 24-30 seats out of 42.
Notably, several opinion polls predicted over 20 seats in West Bengal. As per the latest ETG Research survey, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to win 20-24 seats in West Bengal. Meanwhile, the TMC could be restricted to 17-21 seats. In the 2019 parliamentary polls, the saffron party bagged 18 seats.
Amit Shah's Statement:
Last month, renowned poll strategist Prashant Kishor also made a similar prediction for the BJP. According to Kishor, the saffron party could be the number one party in the Mamata Banerjee-ruled state.
The polling for the Lok Sabha Election in West Bengal is being held in seven phases with the voting completed for the first four phases.
The Union Minister also slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal over the Sandeshkhali incident. He alleged that the TMC government committed atrocities against women on the basis of religion.
"Mamata Banerjee has developed a Modus Operandi. First commit atrocities, once people talk about this then to hide it conduct atrocities again. Sandeshkhali is a classic example of this. Under a female CM's nose, according to religion, atrocities are committed against women...she is quiet? HC has to intervene, still no investigation (by West Bengal Police) and then the case has to go to CBI...she should be ashamed," Shah told ANI.
Sandeshkhali is a village in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, The village witnessed protests due to reported incidents of violence against locals by leaders associated with the ruling TMC. A group of women in Sandeshkhali village accused local TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his associates of systematic sexual harassment and land grabbing.
It was January 5 when a team of Enforcement Directorate was attacked by locals at Sandeshkhali. They had come to raid the the residence of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh in connection to public distribution system scam case. Sheikh has been absconding since then to evade the arrest.
A month after the incident, on February 7, a group of women in Sandeshkhali held protests on the streets against Shahjahan Sheikh and his supporters alleging harassment by its leaders.
The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI investigation into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhal. Shahjahan was arrested in March in connection with the attack on ED officials.
