Bhubaneswar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mohan Charan Majhi has been elected as the leader of the Legislative Party in Odisha, making him the first BJP Chief Minister of the state. Further, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida were announced as the Deputy Chief Ministers.
Mohan Charan Majhi won the Keonjhar seat with a margin of around 87,815 votes. He defeated Naveen Patnaik's-Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Minu Majhi from the constituency, who received 40.84 per cent of the votes.

Who is Mohan Charan Majhi?

A four-time tribal MLA from the Keonjhar assembly in Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi (52) was a teacher in Saraswati Shishu Mandir in his locality before entering into politics. He started his political life from being a Sarpanch in 1997.
  1. He also served as Govt Deputy Chief Whip (2005-2009).
  2. He has also been a Member, Standing Committee of S.C. & S.T. under the ORV Act.
  3. He was the Opposition Chief Whip (2019 - 2024).
  4. He was the Chairperson, Public Accounts Committee (2022-2024).
The 52-year-old was the youngest among the frontrunners for the chief minister post. He won the Keonjhar seat this year with a margin of 11,577 votes.
The four-time MLA has a deep understanding of Odisha’s governance system and has a thorough understanding of the state's governance system and has played a key role in shaping the BJP's policies for the region.
Earlier, sources told Times Now that the BJP was considering a "one chief minister and two deputy chief ministers" formula for the Odisha government. There were four contenders for the Chief Minister post: Manmohan Samal, who was the frontrunner, followed by Suresh Pujari, KV Singh Deo, and Mohan Majhi, they added.
Meanwhile, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Odisha, the BJP won 20 out of 21 seats, while the Congress secured only one seat. On the other hand, the Congress won 14 out of 147 seats, whereas the BJP secured victory in 78 seats in the Assembly elections.

Odisha CM Swearing-In Ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony for Odisha's new Chief Minister will take place on June 12, Odisha BJP President Manmohan Samal said on Monday. "PM Modi will reach on 12th June by 2:30 pm for the oath-taking ceremony. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 5:00 pm. Tomorrow the BJP legislative meeting will be held,” he said.
The new BJP government will be sworn in on Wednesday at 5 pm. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to reach Bhubaneswar at 2:30 pm and will head to Raj Bhavan from the airport. He will later participate in the oath-taking ceremony at Janata Maidan at 5 pm.
The BJP on Sunday appointed Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Bhupender Yadav as central observers for this task. Mohan Charan Majhi’s name was announced by the Union Ministers on Tuesday.
