Not AR Rahman, Sukhwinder Singh Composed Oscar Winning Song Jai Ho, Says Ram Gopal Varma

Jai Ho is an iconic song that garnered global attention after winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2009. AR Rahman reached new heights with his involvement in the film Slumdog Millionaire and this song is one of the major reasons. But here's a surprise: not all of AR Rahman's famous songs were actually composed by him.

Sukhwinder Singh, the composer of Jai Ho, reveals RGV

Yes, you read it right! Recently, renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma made a shocking revelation and disclosed that Jai Ho wasn't originally AR Rahman's creation. It was actually composed by Sukhwinder Singh for Subhash Ghai's Yuvvraaj in 2008 with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. But Subhash thought the song didn't match his movie's style, so A.R. Rahman used it in Slumdog Millionaire, which came out the same year and won an Academy Award.
It's known that Rahman used Sukhwinder Singh's composition for Jai Ho. Since the Oscar-winning crooner was in London and Subhash Ghai needed the music for filming, he asked Sukhwinder to help. Sukhwinder then created the tune for the song, Ram Gopal Varma shared during an interview with Film Companion.

Do you know Jai Ho was composed for Yuvvraaj first?

However, when Subhash Ghai found out that not Rahman, but Sukhwinder had composed the tune, he lost it. The filmmaker further added, "Subhash Ghai blew up the thing, he told Rahman, ‘I am paying you crores of rupees as my music director and you are making Sukhvinder make a tune for me. You have the guts to say that in front of me? If I want Sukhvinder, I’ll sign him, who are you to take my money and make Sukhvinder do the music for me?’”
“Rahman said, ‘Sir, you are paying for my name, not my music. If I am endorsing it, it becomes mine. Now you happen to be here, how do you know where I took Taal music from? My driver could have done it, maybe someone else, whatever else',” Ram Gopal Varma concluded with AR Rahman's reply.
For the unversed, Ram Gopal Varma collaborated with AR Rahman on several albums such as Rangeela and Daud. Meanwhile, Sukhwinder has lent his voice to Rahman's memorable songs like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Ramta Jogi, Mitwa (from Lagaan), Ghanan Ghanan, Taal Se Taal - Western.
