In the ongoing legal saga between Meghan Markle and her half-sister, Samantha, a new trial date has been set, adding another chapter to their court fight. Samantha, aged 59, alleges that Meghan defamed her during the Oprah Winfrey interview when Meghan stated that she had grown up as an only child. Samantha contends that Meghan's comments, including the assertion that she 'doesn't really know her,' were defamatory, and she is now seeking $75,000 in damages.
Case History
While the case was initially dismissed by a judge in March, an amended complaint was filed the following month, prompting continued legal proceedings. Meghan attempted to have the amended complaint dismissed in May, but the judge has yet to rule on the request.
Trial Date Set for November 2024
In a recent decision dated November 14, the same judge scheduled a trial date for November 2024, with 'in-person' meetings preceding the trial. Notably, as the case is in civil court, Meghan is not required to appear if the trial takes place.
Samantha's Claims and Background
Samantha, the eldest daughter of Meghan's father, Thomas, asserts a once-close relationship with Meghan during their childhood. She insists on having helped Meghan with her homework and going on trips to the mall together. However, Samantha alleges that Meghan's attitude changed after she began dating Prince Harry. By 2016, their relationship became estranged, according to Samantha.
Samantha's Lawsuit Details
Initially, Samantha's lawsuit claimed intentional defamation by Meghan, alleging that false information was provided to the authors of Finding Freedom. The amended complaint, however, focuses solely on Meghan's remarks during the Oprah interview, omitting previous claims related to Meghan's alleged involvement in the book.
Meghan's Response
Meghan's legal team has not yet responded to inquiries from DailyMail.com regarding the latest developments in the case. The legal battle continues, with both parties awaiting the judge's decision on the dismissal of the amended complaint.
