Writers Guild Awards 2024 FULL Winners List: The Holdovers, American Fiction, Succession Take Home Top Honours

At the 2024 Writers Guild Awards, held simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles on Sunday night, The Holdovers, American Fiction, and Succession emerged as standout winners. American Fiction clinched the award for Best Adapted Screenplay, mirroring its success at the Oscars, while The Holdovers secured the honor for Best Original Screenplay. Notably, Anatomy of a Fall, recipient of the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, was ineligible for the WGA Awards.
Accepting the accolade in Los Angeles, The Holdovers writer David Hemingson expressed gratitude to the cast and director, dedicating the award to his family members who shaped his love for storytelling and integrity.

TV Series Triumphs

In the television categories, The Bear claimed the title of Best Comedy Series, while Succession earned recognition as the Best Drama Series. The Last of Us and Beef were honoured for Best Writing in a New Series and Best Limited Series Writing, respectively.

Ceremonial Hosts

The Los Angeles ceremony was overseen by Niecy Nash-Betts, while Josh Gondelman took charge of the New York edition.

Delayed Ceremony and Industry Developments

This year's WGA Awards ceremonies were notably postponed, occurring more than a month after the 2024 Oscars. The delay followed the months-long writers strike in 2023, with the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers ultimately reaching a new three-year deal in September. The agreement encompasses provisions safeguarding against AI utilization, enhancing data transparency, ensuring residuals linked to streaming success, and establishing minimum writers room sizes.
