Malayalam Cinema Goes Past Rs 1000 Crore Collections Mark

The cumulative collection from all the Malayalam releases this year has just crossed the coveted Rs 1000 crore mark!
Yes, Malayalam cinema has had a phenomenal year so far and it only keeps getting better and better. This little industry that earlier had releases limited only to a few screens within Kerala, and a few across India and overseas, has changed significantly with the release of some unexpected heavy hitters starting with the survival thriller Manjummel Boys and Mammootty's horror film Bramayugam early this year. Manjummel Boys went on to create history as the first Malayalam film to collect Rs. 200 crore and counting.
The phenomenal success of Malayalam cinema recently can be seen from its contribution to the overall share to the Indian film industry, which is 20 percent of the gross collection in 2024. Bollywood, a much larger industry, has in comparison only collected a 38 per cent share. All this is a new experience for anyone following the Malayalam industry, from the filmmakers to trade analysts to even the fans!

A Significant Change From Last Year

The gross collection of Malayalam cinema was around Rs 500 crores last year, which saw the success of Jude Anthany Joseph's natural diaster film 2018, Jithu Madhavan's horror comedy Romancham, Mammootty's investigative thriller Kannur Squad, Shane Nigam's RDX, and Neer. This is from a total number of releases amounting to over 170 films that were released. However, in just six months in 2024, the industry has almost doubled its earnings to Rs 985 crores, thus nearing the Rs 1000 crore mark with the release of a mere eight films.

Who Were The Heavy Hitters?

A major portion of this box office revenue has been generated from screens outside Kerala. Manjummel Boys, which was released all over only in Malayalam without any dubbed versions, amassed an amount of Rs 100 crores from Tamil Nadu alone. The film also made history by becoming the first Malayalam film to garner a million USD in collections in the United States, and also collected close to Rs 10 crores in the Karnataka market. Another significant contributor was Girish A.D's heartwarming Rom Com Premalu, which did phenomenally well both in its vernacular as well as dubbed releases.
The next wave came with Fahadh Faasil's gangster comedy Aavesham, which raked in over 150 crores in under a month of its release, and is still continuing it's theatrical run successfully even after releasing on OTT.
Now, with Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil, which released on May 16, doing well and collecting over Rs 30 crore, the industry seems to have gone past the landmark number. What's exciting is that Mammootty's Turbo hasn't even released yet and already, the Malayalam film industry has crossed the coveted 1000 crore mark.
