Election Review: A Gripping Political Thriller True To Its Soul

The story revolves around Nadarasan alias Rasu, the son of a dedicated and sincere political party worker called Nallasivam (George Maryan) living in a small village in Vellore district. Although Nallasivam has been loyal to the party he belongs to for decades together, his party leaders only look to use him to further their political ambitions. Despite this, Nallasivam continues to be faithful to his party, always working for the victory of the candidate his party gives a ticket to from his constituency. During one particular local body election, Nallasivam finds himself having to choose between working for his party candidate and canvassing for his close friend of many years called Thanikachalam (Dayalan), who decides to contest the election as an independent. Nallasivam chooses his party over his friend and Thanikachalam loses the election. The loss does not go down well with Thanikachalam, who has a son called Sudhakar (Dhileepan), and a daughter called Selvi (Richa Joshi). Thanikachalam parts ways with Nallasivam on a bitter note. Their fall out has an impact on Rasu and Selvi, who have known each other from the time they were children and have eventually fallen in love. Thanikachalam gets Selvi married to someone else and Rasu is shattered. What happens then is what the film is all about…

Election Review A Gripping Political Thriller True To Its Soul
A Still From Election

About Election

Analysis

Director Thamizh comes up with a powerful and well-made political thriller that gives you an idea of the intense political battles that are fought on the ground in villages during local body elections. The film is a fantastic piece of work, which seems to be the culmination of years of hard labour.
To come up with a story of this nature, one must have observed the whole political process in detail from close quarters. In his Election, Director Tamizh seems determined to shine the light on all the elements associated with power and politics – treachery, loyalty, connivance, betrayal, manipulation and opportunism.
Election is a film that is an eye-opener. It showcases beautifully all the different stakeholders in the race for power. From those who believe that posts are meant to be occupied by only those who belong to their families, to those from the oppressed classes who see posts as a way to make others recognise their presence, there are peoples of all kinds in an election.
What makes Election stand out is that it does not only showcase how those in senior party positions benefit, it also highlights how the vulnerable, gullible party worker who continues to reimpose faith in the party and its leadership, is repeatedly exploited. It makes you realise that for the unversed and the unaware, politics could actually be a quagmire, drawing them in to their deaths.

Vijay Kumar Impresses!

The casting is perfect and every actor who plays a character in this film has delivered. It is as if you are watching events in your life unfold in front of you on a screen. Actor Vijay Kumar, who is known to pick hard-hitting meaningful subjects for his films, does not disappoint in this one either. He plays with flair the character of Nadarasu, owning it wholeheartedly.

Preethi Asrani Makes An Impact

Preethi Asrani, who impressed with her performance in Ayothi, comes up with an impactful performance as Nadarasu’s wife Hema. This is a more demanding role than the one she played in Ayothi but Preethi is up to the challenge. The lass has no problems turning into the devoted, well educated wife of Nadarasu. She is so convincing that you literally start believing her to be from the region.

Career-best Performance For Dhileepan

Dhileepan comes up with a career best performance as Sudhakar. Delivering a measured and intense performance, Dhileepan shows he is capable of playing a character with multiple layers.
George Maryan, who plays Rasu’s dad Nallasivam, as always delivers a fantastic performance. The senior artiste plays the role of the innocent and dedicated party worker to perfection.

Technical aspects

On the technical front, the first thing that strikes you about the film is its stunt sequences. Outstanding stunt sequences, that are realistic in nature, make you keep your eyes glued to the screen. Full marks to Stunt Choreographer Stunner Sam on this one.
On the technical side, the music of Govind Vasantha is the next big plus for the film. It is pulsating and intense, as and when required. Mahendran Jayaraju’s visuals are so realistic that you don’t see the scenes as separate entities. They simply merge into the film and become one with it.

Verdict

After a long time, Tamil cinema has got an intense political thriller that is true to its soul. This is not everyone’s cup of tea but if you love political thrillers, then this is a film you cannot afford to miss.
