About Code 8: Part II

Jeff Chan's sequel, Code 8: Part II, brings back Connor Reed (Robbie Amell) and Garrett Kelton (Stephen Amell), after they part after the botched heist in the previous film Code 8. After five years, the characters are reunited for a good cause as Connor must help a teenager evade a bunch of corrupt officers. The former partners' reunion is a bit tense as they had resolved never to meet again. The Canadian sci-fi thriller premiered on February 28 on Netflix.

Code 8 Part II: Plot

The world of Code 8, set in the fictional Lincoln City, features a select few who have special abilities. These PWPs (people with powers) aren't heroes though. Often, they're the ones committed a crime. In this sequel, Robbie's Connor looks to redeem himself after the events of the first film. But once again, he finds himself having to turn to the ex-con Garrett to get help on his new mission. Will the two be able to save 14-year-old Pavani (Sirena Gulamgaus) and help her get justice for her slain brother?

Code 8 Part II: Writing and Direction

The action sci-fi feature is penned by Chan, Chris Paré, Sherren Lee and Jesse LaVercombe. The dystopian world of Lincoln City is once again on high alert after Connor and Garrett decide to sneak out Pav and it sets up a battle with the two men going up against the entire police force. This time the focus on the robots within the highly policed Lincoln City - the Guardians and K9s that track each move of citizens when activated and are authorized to kill on command.
Seeing as this sort of technology also exists in our real world, this aspect of the film is even more unsettling as the K9s specially targets PWPs and youngsters. Chan navigates this world well but the pacing on the feature lags sometimes. There are buildups to certain twists and reveals, after which point the action slows down again. The filmmaker should have kept his foot on the pedal on this sequel, especially when the stakes are so high.

Code 8 Part II: Performances

Code 8: Part II pits the Amell cousins against each other in hopes to recapture the interest the first film garnered between their fans. Arrow star Stephen and his younger cousin Robbie, known for series The Flash and Upload, sell the dynamic of antagonists-turned-allies. However, Robbie's Connor has the audience's sympathy from the first film, and he carries that over in the sequel too. Stephen is one note as the gruffer Garrett who forms a reluctant alliance with the police. Gulamgaus holds her own in the scenes with the Amells. Alex Mallari Jr is apt as Sergeant Kingston who leads the corrupt cops.

Code 8 Part II: Critique

With the action increased for round two, the feature film continues the story forward in a believable manner. The spotlight on the police robots was a good call but the sequel remains too heavily focused on this to thrown attention to other characters like Jean Yoon's Mina. Her character was underutilised here. Code 8: Part II is a suitable follow up to the world introduced in the 2019 film. It just could have done more.
