Ex Stream Benefits: Looking Back At The Best & Beast On OTT In February

February brought revelation for Indian digital platforms, not overwhelmed but influenced by global standards set by Netflix's One Day and Amazon's Expats. One Day propelled two unknown actors, notably Ambika Mod, into overnight stardom. Mod's portrayal of Emma captivated, but it's Leo Woodall's performance as Dexter that truly shone, seamlessly embodying the character's essence.

No, the OTT platform didn’t creak and groan with an overload of content last month. And yet February was an eyeopener for the still-nascent Indian digital platform. Can we really match up to the standards set by Netflix’s One Day and Amazon’s Expats?
The impact of One Day was so intensely global that it bequeathed overnight stardom on two unknown actors, one of them of India origin. A big shout out to our own Ambika Mod for playing Emma with so little ostentation and so much concentration. Ambika’s Emma, like the series, grows on you. But the real star of the show is Leo Woodall. Immaculately cast as the privileged trainwreck, he is so into Dexter’s vain world that he makes you wonder if the character chose him or vice versa.

Coincidentally, the other major OTT event of February also has an actress of Indian origin in a pivotal role. Expats streamed a couple of episodes in January and then four episodes in February, concluding its compelling journey on February 23. After a successful year in 2023, with projects like To All the Boys’ spinoff XO, Kitty and Amazon Original A Million Miles Away, actress Sarayu Blue of Indian parentage portrayed the colour-blind role of Hilary Starr, a successful businesswoman with impeccable taste in fashion and a no-nonsense attitude.
The story centered on three American women whose lives dramatically collide after a mysterious disappearance. Sarayu Blue revealed Expats explored friendships among women, which resonated with her on many levels. It also explored classicism and privilege, and she loved the fact that the director Lulu tackled such tangled topics so wholeheartedly.
Coming to the indigenous creations, by far the leader of the pack last month was Amazon’s Love Storiyan. A Valentine’s Day special, it explored real-life “impossible couples” overcoming all hurdles to be together. The choice of couples included a trans woman and a trans man. This episode was edited out of the omnibus in some countries where the LGBTQ community is yet to attain legitimacy. Producer Karan Johar feels an effort like Love Storiyan to humanise “forbidden” love goes a long way in creating an awareness about relationships for long hidden out of view. I couldn’t agree more.
Pathbreaking in its way was Richie Mehta’s Poachers on Netflix. Poachers has the disturbing even flattened-out tone of a drama that won’t humour the audience with manufactured highs. When it ends we feel no sense of vindication. Man’s relationship with Nature is screwed for keeps. This portrait of wounded civilization hellbent on wiping itself out of the map, is just the warning we need.
The most redundant happening of the month was Disney+Hotstar’s Aarya 3. The concluding episodes made us happy to see the last of this utterly misguided homage to female machismo.
