Signs And Symptoms Of COVID-19 You Should Watch Out For
India has seen an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the active cases in the country stand at 871. As per the data released on mohfw.gov.in, 74 new cases of COVID were reported with no fatalities.
Coronavirus disease, also known as COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention.
“Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age,” says WHO.
One of the best ways to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well-informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Take necessary precautions to protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently.
How does the virus spread?
WHO says that the virus spreads from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. To prevent the spread of the virus, one might follow respiratory etiquette. These can range from coughing into a flexed elbow to staying home and self-isolating until you recover if you feel unwell.
Common symptoms of COVID-19
Here, take a look at some of the common symptoms of COVID. If you notice these symptoms, get yourself tested and self-isolate to prevent the spread.
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Muscle aches
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Chest pain
- Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
How to differentiate between COVID-19 and flu?
Both influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are contagious respiratory illnesses, however, both of these are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) first identified in 2019. Flu is caused by infection with a flu virus (influenza viruses).
There’s no way to tell the difference between flu and COVID-19 by the symptoms alone because both of these have similar signs and symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that specific testing is needed to tell what the illness is and to confirm a diagnosis. “Having a medical professional administer a specific test that detects both flu and COVID-19 allows you to get diagnosed and treated for the specific virus you have more quickly.”
