Heart Failure Symptoms: Warning Sign That You May Not Spot In The Morning

Heart failure occurs when the heart muscles weaken, leading to inadequate blood circulation. Symptoms include fluid buildup causing swollen ankles and legs (oedema), shortness of breath, fatigue, and rapid heartbeat among others. Several factors contribute, including coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, heart valve issues and infections. Read on to know more about the symptoms of the condition.

Warning Sign of Heart Failure That You May Not Spot In The Morning

Heart failure is a condition wherein your heart muscles don’t pump blood like it should. When this happens, blood often backs up and fluid can build up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath. Heart failure can be a life-threatening condition and there’s no cure for the condition.
There are certain symptoms of heart failure that you can notice and this can help you with early diagnosis and you can eventually seek treatment for the condition.
One symptom of heart failure that a lot of people tend to miss is the fluid accumulation in the body which causes your swollen ankles and legs. Also, known as oedema, this is a condition which you might not notice in the morning and it tends to get worse as the day goes by.

Here’s what you should know about oedema.

Oedema is a medical condition which is characterized by swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body’s tissues. It typically affects the legs, ankles, feet, and hands, but can occur in other parts of the body as well. Other common causes of oedema include prolonged standing or sitting, pregnancy, certain medications, and underlying health conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease or liver disease.

Other symptoms of oedema:

For people who have heart failure, they tend to develop symptoms slowly. However, some symptoms might start suddenly. Some of the symptoms of heart failure are:
  • Shortness of breath with activity or when lying down
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles and feet
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Reduced ability to exercise
  • Wheezing
  • A cough that doesn't go away or a cough that brings up white or pink mucus with spots of blood
  • Swelling of the belly area
  • Very rapid weight gain from fluid buildup
  • Nausea and lack of appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating or decreased alertness
  • Chest pain if heart failure is caused by a heart attack.

Causes of heart failure

Heart failure is usually caused by a weak, damaged or stiff heart. Mayo Clinic says that if the heart is damaged or weakened, the heart chambers may stretch and get bigger. The heart can’t pump out the needed amount of blood. If the main pumping chambers of the heart, called the ventricles, are stiff, they can’t fill with enough blood between beats. “The heart muscle can be damaged by certain infections, heavy alcohol use, illegal drug use and some chemotherapy medicines. Your genes also can play a role.”
Here, take a look at some of the other conditions that might cause a heart failure
  • Coronary artery disease and heart attack
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart valve disease
  • Inflammation of the heart muscle
  • Congenital heart defect
  • Irregular heart rhythms
  • Other diseases such as diabetes, HIV infection, an overactive or underactive thyroid or a buildup of iron or protein.
Other causes of sudden heart failure also include:
  • Allergic reactions
  • Any illness that affects the whole body
  • Blood clots in the lungs
  • Severe infections
  • Use of certain medicines
  • Viruses that attack the heart muscle.
