Recently there has been an upsurge in cases of kidney diseases being diagnosed in young adults. Kidney diseases which have been traditionally associated with older people, are now rising among young adults. But what can be the cause? As per health experts, several factors contribute to this rise, including lifestyle choices, dietary habits, and chronic health conditions like hypertension and diabetes at younger ages. A poor diet, characterized by a high intake of processed foods and sugars, alongside a sedentary lifestyle, leads to obesity, a significant risk factor for kidney disease.
This rise in kidney cases in youngsters is a major health problem that needs urgent attention. Hence, we got in touch with Dr Prakash Chandra Shetty Urologist from Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, Mumbai, who shares causes and strategies for the prevention of kidney diseases in young adults.
Causes Of Kidney Disease In Young Adults
Dr Prakash Chandra Shetty explains how lifestyle factors, health diseases along environmental factors may lead to the onset of kidney diseases in young adults.
1. Lifestyle Factors:
-Dietary Habits:
Kidney diseases are mainly caused by the intake of foods which have high salt, sugar and unhealthy fat levels, leading to some other health problems such as hypertension and diabetes that are majorly associated with kidney disease.
-Obesity:
The primary causes of obesity among young adults today include lack of physical activity and poor dieting habits. Additionally, increased body weight leads to health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure that eventually damage the kidneys.
-Substance Abuse:
Dependency on drugs such as alcohol among others, also unmanageable consumption of over-the-counter drugs can all together stress the kidneys beyond their limits hence chronic kidney disease.
2. Diabetes and Hypertension:
There is an increasing number of adolescents being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or hypertensive problems causing kidney damage at early ages. Moreover, poorly controlled blood sugar may result in diabetic nephropathy-another name for renal failure which is a major cause of most cases of end-stage renal disease globally in clinical terms.
In some individuals, kidney diseases are a hereditary risk. One such example is polycystic kidney disease (PKD) where fluid-filled sacs start forming in the kidneys. This starts causing issues at a young age only leading to progressive kidney damage over time.
3. Environmental and Socioeconomic Factors:
- Access to Healthcare:
Differences in financial situations affect access to quality healthcare, checks, and education about staying healthy lifestyles. When there are delays in diagnosis and treatment, it can make those problems worse.
- Exposure to Toxins:
Environmental pollutants are not good for your health and the things you might be around at your workplace may contribute to kidney damage. Young adults who work in industries with high exposure to harmful substances are more likely at risk.
Strategies For Prevention
Dr Prakash Chandra Shetty shares strategies that may help in the prevention of kidney diseases at a young age.
1. Promoting Healthy Lifestyles:
- Balanced Diet: The risk factors can be lowered by eating a diet high in fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein and low in sugary drinks and processed foods.
- Regular Exercise: Staying physically active is one good way to remain healthy and steer clear of diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. To keep yourself in good health, you should exercise for at least 30 minutes daily.
2. Early Screening and Monitoring:
- Routine Check-Ups:
These regular check-ups can show if your kidneys are working properly by testing your blood pressure, levels of glucose in your body and how well the kidneys are functioning. Starting on this health issue early may mean that they do not get worse over time because treatments help it.
-Targeted Screening:
If any member of your family has an inherited kidney disorder, then it becomes even more vital for you to be sure that your own kidneys are fine. This includes getting screened more often on specific things which pertain to them.
3. Education and Awareness:
-Public Awareness Campaigns:
Social media campaigns, seminars in schools, colleges, and community programs can motivate behavioural changes by informing young people about the dangers of kidney disease and why it is important to maintain healthy kidneys.
4. Policy and Advocacy:
- Healthcare Access:
We should support policies that ensure fair access to healthcare services for everyone, including checkups to catch early problems. This includes expanding insurance and making healthcare costs cheaper for young adults.
-Regulating Harmful Substances
To minimize the likelihood of kidney problems, it might be essential to make regulations on issues such as drugs and environmental toxins that can damage your kidneys.
