Anupam Mittal, CEO of People Group and Shaadi.com in a recent podcast shared that he experienced panic attacks. He is also one of the sharks in the popular reality show Shark Tank India. In the podcast, he speaks about the success of the reality show, his work, friends and more. While speaking on a podcast by Ranveer Allahbadia, he also spoke about his panic attacks and anxiety.
Sharing his mental health issues, Anupam Mittal said, he was overwhelmed and had his first panic attack when he was in the United States during the Dotcom crisis. “Panic attack ek aisi cheeze hai, agar aapne experience nahi kiya toh bhagwan chaahe aap kabhi nahi karo. (A panic attack is something that, if you haven't experienced, may God forbid you never do),” said Mittal.
Speaking about his experience, Mittal says it feels like “mother earth will swallow you. The walls start coming close to you. You feel like you are having trouble breathing. You look slow and calm from the outside but there is a fire burning inside you. And you don’t know what to do. You are ready to do anything at that time. If someone tells you that, ‘I’ll shoot you and end your life,’ you will be ready to do that.”
Mittal also says that over time, he has learned about anxiety. He began going to a therapist and continues to take therapy when needed.

What is a panic attack?

A panic attack is a sudden and intense episode of fear and anxiety that causes severe physical symptoms such as racing heart, fast breathing and sweating among others. This usually happens even when there is no real danger or apparent cause. Mayo Clinic says that the condition “can be very frightening. When panic attacks occur, you might think you're losing control, having a heart attack or even dying.”
Most people tend to have one or two panic attacks in their entire life, however, for some people, it is recurrent. They tend to have unexpected panic attacks and they tend to spend a long time in constant fear of another attack. While panic attacks are not life-threatening, but, the condition affects the quality of your life significantly.

A panic attack usually starts suddenly and the symptoms tend to peak within 10 mins of the attack and then start to disappear. Some of the common symptoms of panic attacks are:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Tingling or numbness in your fingers or toes
  • Intense fear or terror
  • A choking or smothering sensation
  • Fear of losing control
  • Feeling like you’re going to die

Factors that increase the risk of panic attacks

There are several factors that might cause panic attacks. One tends to spot the early symptoms of panic disorders in their late teens or early childhood. Here, take a look at some factors that increase the risk of panic attacks, according to experts.
  • Family history of panic attacks or panic disorder
  • Major life stress, such as the death or serious illness of a loved one
  • A traumatic event, such as sexual assault or a serious accident
  • Major changes in your life, such as a divorce or the addition of a baby
  • Smoking or excessive caffeine intake
  • History of childhood physical or sexual abuse.
