As Modi 3.0 Ministers Take Charge, Suspense Continues Over Two Key Positions

BJP President JP Nadda, whose term ended in January 2023 and was extended due to the Lok Sabha polls, has been allocated the portfolios of Health and Family Welfare as well as Chemicals and Fertilizers. The new BJP president would be required to act quickly since Assembly elections are scheduled later this year in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra.

New Delhi: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in completed and the new ministers' portfolios assigned, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) now faces two major tasks: selecting a new Speaker for the Lok Sabha and appointing a party chief.
Another crucial task for the BJP is finalising the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) choice for the Lok Sabha Speaker. As per multiple reports, both Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) want the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.
TDP with 16 seats and the JD (U) with 12 seats are necessary partners of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) 3.0. One of the frontrunners for the Lok Sabha Speaker post is Daggubati Purandeswari, daughter of TDP founder NT Rama Rao.
A BJP politician from Andhra Pradesh, she is also the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Purandeswari previously served as the Minister of Human Resource Development in 2009 and as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2012.
A new Speaker may be elected on June 26 and the President is likely to give a joint address to both the houses following the election of the Speaker.
Throughout Modi 2.0, the position of Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha remained unfilled. In the first Narendra Modi government, this role was occupied by M Thambidurai of the AIADMK, an ally of the BJP at the time. Now, the question is whether the BJP will keep this position or allocate it to an ally.
President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday appointed Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister at a grand swearing-in ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, which was followed by the swearing-in of other members of his ministerial team.
Joining the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government were a total of 30 cabinet ministers, 36 Ministers of State (MoS), and 5 Ministers of State with independent charge from the BJP and its allies.
