'Changing names does not...': EAM Jaishankar on China's Claim on Arunachal Pradesh

China, which claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet, routinely objects to Indian leaders' visits to the state to highlight its claims. Beijing has also named the area 'Zangnan'.

In a statement at the Corporate Summit 2024, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar firmly dismissed China's recent claims over Arunachal Pradesh, emphasising that changing names is not going to change the reality of the northeastern state being a part of India. The summit was organised by the Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry along with the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on Monday.
Jaishankar said, "If today I change the name of your house, will it become mine? Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be a state of India. Changing names does not have an effect."
This statement came after China's renewed assertion that Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers to as "Zangan" and considers an inherent part of its territory, does not belong to India. The Chinese Defence Ministry explicitly stated that it "never acknowledges and firmly opposes" the existence of the "so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India."
India, on its part, once again rejected these claims. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded, asserting that Arunachal Pradesh remains an "integral and inalienable part of India." The MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, criticised the repetition of "absurd claims and baseless arguments," asserting that Arunachal Pradesh is a part of India.
"Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Its people will continue to benefit from our development programmes and infrastructure projects," Jaiswal added.
China referring to Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet and its routine objections to visits by Indian leaders to the state have long been a point of contention.
